Mount-N-Repair has a new home

At first, David “Mort” Mortimer and his wife Kathy were surprised and angry.

After all, they had operated their jewelry sales and repair business, Mount-N-Repair, out of the same Ocean Blvd. location for the past 22 years. How could they possibly consider moving off of Siesta Key and maintaining that same level of success?

As it turned out, they didn’t exactly have a choice. Two years ago, Chris Brown, the owner of Arches Plaza, the building where the Mortimers’ jewelry store is, traded properties with Harry Walia, who owned the Kress Building on Main Street in Sarasota. This year, as the days wind down on the last three-year lease the couple had signed with Brown, Walia has informed them that he will not be renewing that lease.

“Also, the owner of Used Book Heaven (the adjacent store to Mount-N-Repair) is retiring at the end of next month,” Mort said. “So after that, the whole building will be vacant.”

What Walia’s plans are for the well-located Siesta Key building is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain–as of December 1, Mount-N-Repair will have opened in a new Sarasota location.

Mort says that when he and Kathy first got the news that their lease was not going to be renewed, they thought they would just open in another spot on Siesta Key. That was easier said than done, though, because over the past two years, all the retail space on the Key has been filled. When it came time for them to look for a location, there was nothing available.

They eventually decided to relocate to the corner of Bee Ridge Road and Cattlemen Road, at one of the busiest intersections in Sarasota. And in a stroke of much needed good luck, this location will likely turn out to be much better than the one on the Key.

“I was upset about having to move at first, but it’s time to move on,” Mort said. “We have a lot of customers who live on the mainland, so it will be easier for them to get to us.”

Plus, many of the tourists traveling out to Siesta Key on vacation will be passing right by the new Mount-N-Repair anyway. The new space will have a lot more room for displaying the Mortimers’ vast selection of sterling silver, stainless steel and gold jewelry, about 1,280 square feet in the showroom, as opposed to the 550 square feet they have now. And there will be plenty of area for the repair and jewelry design business, as well. As their days of doing business on the Key come to a close, Mort says that he and Kathy remain hopeful that the new location will be a place that their previous customers will still love and that new clientele can more readily find. Since they’ve been in the same place for so long, the upcoming move has actually turned out to be a positive, exciting change.

“The construction crew is doing the build-out of the new place right now,” Mort said. “I figure, if I can’t be on the Key, I may as well be where there is a lot of traffic and where people can easily fi nd us.”

Until November 30, Mount-N-Repair will be at 5216 C Ocean Blvd., on Siesta Key. As of December 1, the new Mount-N-Repair will be at 5872 Bee Ridge Road, in the Centergate Plaza. Although the phone number will change, you can still call their existing number: 941-346-7218, for updated contact information. Their hours will be Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can also follow them on their Facebook page: Mount-N-Repair Sarasota FL.
