Mothers Helping Mothers.
MHM is a Not-For-Profit, all volunteer staff, serving our community since 1990. There are no paid employees! 100% goes right back into our community to help families in need.
I bet you would be surprised to find out where this organization got its start? Many years ago, a couple of young women were reading a local paper and found there were women and families at the Salvation Army. Madeline Brogan, pregnant at the time, thought I wonder if they need any help? She called and sure enough was able to get them some much needed necessities… Later, Terry Stottlemyer joined in and they began collecting clothes and other items to give (at no charge) to families in need. At the time, there was a chef, Paul Mattison, who worked at the Summerhouse on Siesta Key, he volunteered to host a fund raiser, called the Taste of the Holidays, and it was a success! Year after year, more restaurants joined in and it moved to the Davidson’s area on SK. Paul Mattison of Mattison’s http://mattisons.com/ continues to help with fundraisers for MHM and others around town. He is a great example giving back and using your skills to help someone else!
Last year, MHM, helped 6,700 families representing 9500 children in Sarasota, Bradenton & Venice. The need continues to grow each year. For 25 years they have been working continually to help provide at risk families, make ends meet. Working families sometimes just need a helping hand with clothing, etc. to get back on track. Without MHM many parents would find it difficult to cloth their growing children.
Here’s a few of the items they need:
Cribs, Strollers, car seats,
Maternity Clothes, Mother’s work clothes,
Newborn, Baby & Children’s clothing, shoes,
New Socks, New Underwear, New Hygiene products (you can find many items like deodorant etc at the dollar store)
They always need new packages of diapers!!! (All sizes) and wipes.
School supplies, small household items…
And of course money!!! Donations are tax deductible!
They always need volunteers, it can be as little as 1 hour to help get things from the donation area to the shelves. (Sorting sizes, girls, boys etc.)
I’ve volunteered there and it is a great experience! It is very fulfilling to see clients find the stuff they need at no charge! It is such a pleasure to see a child smile when they find a toy to bring home!
The key to donating items is only donate an article of clothing that you would wear…clothing must be clean, no holes, no stains, etc.
If you have larger items, like furniture, they have a program that allows clients to shop at Habitat for Humanity. You simply tell Habitat for Humanity that your donation is for Mothers Helping Mothers. You can even schedule a pick up…
If you are a High School student, you can fill your community service hours at MHM! If you are a working mom, that needs Pals hours at school, you can donate clothing in exchange for your parent volunteer hours at some of our area schools. (Usually, it’s 10 pieces of clothing = 1 hour)
They are open on Tuesdays & Fridays from 9 to 11:30 for donations and client services.
They are located at: 5933 N Washington Blvd., just south of University on 301 (on the west side of the road) for more information call 941-953-7572.
