ON THE BEACH…
Explore the joy of movement on Siesta Key beach each week. Did you know that Sarasota’s holistic community believes our gorgeous white sand has a concentration of energy that maximizes the ability to heal physically and emotionally? They credit this energy to our sand’s history and its makeup (99.9% quartz). It’s no wonder you’ll find a class taking place on the beach, on any given day, to help participants connect with themselves. While you’re here, why not take some time for yourself with a class on our cooling mystical sand. The following classes/events take place on the beach every week:
FREE T’AI CHI CHIH – Siesta Beach, Access #5 – Every Monday, 15 minutes before sunset. Open to all, no experience necessary. Contact Diana Daffner 941-346-1024 for information. (Access #5 is in Siesta Village, where Beach Rd meets Ocean Blvd.)

DRUM CIRCLE – Every Sunday an hour before sunset and lasts until around 10pm. South of the main pavillion.

JULY – AUG (TUES) 5:30-7:30 PM / KIDS SUMMER BEACH RUNS: This is a one-mile fun run for kids of all ages. Weekly registration held at 5:30 pm with race time at 6:30 pm. Registration is on-site. All participants receive a ribbon and a popsicle. Free T-shirts are earned after 4 runs are completed. There is a one-time, $1 registration fee. Contact County for additonal info: 941-861-5000.
JULY – DEC (SAT) 9:30-10:30 AM / BEACH UNIVERSITY: the free environmental education program, returns to Siesta Beach to teach the community how to best care for the ecology. All classes are held in the main pavilion at Siesta Beach, 948 Beach Road on Siesta Key. All are welcome to attend the hour-long outdoor sessions, featuring exceptional instructors and hands-on curriculum that relate to the coastal environment and how to best care for the ecology. This year’s classes cover turtles, sharks, manatees, problems with plastics, resilient estuaries, clean water and much more. No registration is required, but seating is limited. JULY 7 & 8 (SAT-SUN) 8AM – 7PM / DIG THE BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: Dig the Beach Volleyball Series is the most established and successful grassroots series of its kind catering to both professional and amateur players. Some of the top professionals on the Domestic & World Tours have graduated from this organization. To register or for additional info, see website: www.digthebeach.com. Spectators will be able to watch the courts from the elevated East Concession stand.
JULY 9-13 (MON-FRI) 8:30AM – NOON / BEACH VOLLEYBALL CAMP: Campers will master the fundamentals, develop proper mechanics and gain game play experience in this camp directed by Megan Wallin, a professional volleyball player. Coaches cover the rules, player rotation and zones. Camp includes fun games and maybe a few dance moves! Megan has a hands-on coaching style with a philosophy that practice repetition creates performance perfection. Your camper’s performance as an athlete will skyrocket, along with his or her self-confidence! Campers should bring water, healthy snacks and lunch. They should wear sunscreen and comfortable clothing including spandex or swimsuit and a shirt. Open to players of all ability levels. Shade tents provided. Ages: 8-15.
JULY 9-13 (MON-FRI) 8AM – NOON / SKIM, SURF & PADDLE CAMP: Let’s go surfin’ now, everybody’s learnin’ how! Suitable for all skill levels, this camp consists of skim, surf and stand-up paddle board instruction, demonstration and practice, mixed with beach activities and plenty of summertime fun. Qualified instructors focus on board awareness, balance, flexibility and strength. Campers also learn basic ocean knowledge on tides, wind and waves; sports nutrition and fitness; and environmental awareness from professional instructors and educators. Meet at the beach pavilion. Campers should bring sunscreen, snacks and a refillable water bottle. Loaner equipment is available by calling in advance.

JULY 16-20 (MON-FRI) 9AM – NOON / WOODSHOP 101 CAMP & ADVANCED: This event takes place at Turtle Beach Park. Here is an opportunity for campers to really get busy with a hammer and nails! What joyous things we can create with wood. Campers go home with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. All supplies and tools are included.
Advanced Camp is from 1-4 pm and is for returning 101 campers or with prior authorization from instructor. Advanced campers will work on a larger one-of-a-kind piece that they can show off with pride. Design, new tools and sawdust – a great way to spend your day! Ages: 6-12.
JULY 19-24 (THURS-TUES) 8AM – 8PM / USA JUNIORS BEACH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Top junior athletes from across the nations compete in sand volleyball. For details, visit www.nationalbeachtour.com.
JULY 23-27 (MON-FRI) 9AM-NOON / MAD SCIENCE CAMP: This event takes place at Turtle Beach Park. Be an environmental superhero and save the planet! Discover what ecosystems are all about, investigate greenhouse effects and solar cooking. Campers will also unearth pollution solutions and other ways to help our planet as well as investigate nature’s colors and the science of scent. Ages: 6-12.
JULY 23-27 (MON-FRI) 1-4 PM / MAD SCIENCE CAMP: This event takes place at Turtle Beach Park. Use science to help solve a real crime and track down suspects. Use skills of recall and observation, take a close look at evidence with forensics, decode messages and find out how spies work undercover. Battling crime has never been so fun! Ages: 6-12.
