In the late 1980’s one of my favorite jobs was teaching behavior modification classes. Soon after I became a regional training manager and trained our trainers to teach the same classes. When I taught the behavior mod classes, my clients held all kinds of positions, such as psychiatric social workers, doctors, lawyers, psychologists, teachers, accountants, salespeople, you name it. They sat in my weekly class to learn how to change their behavior towards eating and food to facilitate the weight loss program they were on. They excelled in their field and simply wanted to excel with improving their health as well. All of them had different thoughts they believed about food- ones that caused them to go up and down with their weight. The only clients that succeeded with losing weight and keeping it off, were the ones that replaced their old thoughts about food and eating with new thoughts. But the key was that they remained consistent with believing the new thoughts.
You see, you can have lots of thoughts in your memory bank. But it’s the ones you believe that are what drives those thoughts into action. And the stronger our feelings are about choosing to believe certain thoughts, the harder it is to break the habits that form as a result of those beliefs. But the good news is, if those thoughts and beliefs bring us towards peace and happiness as well as improved health, then that’s a habit we want to keep.
So where are you with your thoughts on a daily basis? Which ones do you have a tight hold on as far as believing strongly in them without budging? Are they working for you or against you? Are they moving you forward or backwards? Are you at peace as a result? We think constantly, but it would benefit us more if we realized how what we’re thinking can really affect us. The thoughts we believe in are so powerful that they’re what drives our actions each day. Thoughts are so important that there’s even many famous quotes out there about them. Many years ago I purchased a book from 1946 called the “Power of Thought” by J. H. Bustanoby that still sits in my basket right next to my couch. So this topic has been long thought out (little thoughts humor).
Here are some quotes I like from a very long list about thoughts, as well as some of my comments. Perhaps one may resonate with you and inspire you to change what thoughts you want to believe in from this point forward:
“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought”. ~Peace Pilgrim
What we think, but most importantly what we believe about what we think, is basically what we manifest. But that’s a good thing if our thoughts are aligned with love.
“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” ~William Shakespeare
This quote helps to remind us that we don’t have to put a judgment on an experience. For example, some may believe themselves to be weak and unworthy when they fall backwards on their diet. If they consider falling backwards as just having an experience, it will make it an easier process to take appropriate measures to move forward again.
“You create your thoughts. Your thoughts create your intentions, and your intentions create your reality.” ~Wayne W. Dyer. This quote can motivate us to purge old thought patterns that don’t match what we want to manifest. But the key is to replace the old list of thoughts, with new realistic thoughts that we feel good about and believe. For example: Old thought- “I have no time to help myself because I’m too busy helping others.” New thought- “I am just as important and special as anyone else. Therefore, I realize that in order to help others genuinely and give my all, I have to help myself first, because I matter too.”
“Self-worth comes from one thing – thinking that you are worthy.” ~Wayne W. Dyer
Zig Ziglar’s famous book, “See You at the Top” which I read in my early 20’s, “was rejected 39 times before it was published in 1975”. Hence, it’s probably safe to assume Zig believed he as well as his book to be worthy enough to drive his actions towards success. There are countless stories of how people were told they wouldn’t amount to anything, and believed it, until they later learned the truth about their intelligence. But the key was they turned off the old false belief, and adopted the truth as their new belief. Can we turn off old thoughts and our beliefs about them like a light switch? From my own personal experience, I say yes. That’s only if we consistently practice thinking the new beliefs, and then make the choice to take action to match it.
“Since the thoughts you believe will always win, guard your mind like a castle, and only allow positive thoughts in.” ~Donnarose Melvin. Use caution when you hear opinions about you, or even read or watch certain things on T.V. or social media. Only allow thoughts that will serve your Highest good and are aligned with love to take residence in your mind. Be the guard of your castle- that being your mind. And remember that only you are in charge of what’s allowed to come in.
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”~Aristotle
This quote helps to remind us, that even though floods of thoughts come and go daily from whatever we’re exposed to, they’re not always true, and we don’t have to believe them. Remember, it’s the thoughts we believe that have power, and are what drives our actions. So consider your thoughts to be like watching a film, allowing the frames that don’t serve you to keep going, and the ones that do and are aligned with love, to be planted in your memory.
The act of replacing old thoughts and beliefs with new ones that serve your Highest good may be difficult at first. But as I always say, practice makes habit. Add patience and perseverance in the mix, and this thought process will truly become second nature. And you’ll find yourself feeling more at ease and at peace, and frequently at that happy place in your heart. ~♥
