July is full of summertime fun! But, I’m sure you’ll be looking for a place to wind down after a day at the beach!  Here are some places to cool off, and enjoy the artsy Sarasota lifestyle…

July 1 to July 6 – At the Hop – Florida Studio Theatre – A delightfulThe Alley Cats cabaret featuring The Alley Cats – In the John C. Court Cabaret.  America’s Premiere Doo-Wop group, performing songs of the 50s and 60s. This cappella group entertains with humor and a contemporary style of song. July 1 to Aug 23 – Out of Bounds, summer match up at the FloridaFST Improv Studio Theatre – In the Browne’s Lab Theatre.  Teams take the stage in Bowne’s Lab to compete for the most laughs, includes audience suggestions.  FST Improv actors will translate your suggestions into a comic routine. July 1 to Aug 15 Mixed Nuts at the Florida Studio Theatre in the Browne’s Lab Theatre.  Mixed Nuts at FST is a fun & exciting way to spend a Wednesday evening in the new Bowne’s Lab Theatre.  It takes place on Wednesdays at 7:30pm every week, FST acting, Improv, and Spoken Word students perform live. Tickets are only $5.

1st Wednesday: – Acting Up – Students from FST’s adult education program present monologues, scenes, and original work that includes everything from music and movement to short plays and theatre.  2nd Wednesday: – Laugh. Out. Loud – Improv students perform LIVE to show off their skills! Games, sketches, and laughter that will incorporate audience suggestions and real-time improvising. 3rd Wednesday: – Spoken Word – inspiring Live music accompany an open mic where anyone in the audience can read original poetry.  From High School students to young professional actors, to experienced artists. The night ends with a fun Poetry Slam, featuring poets performing original work.  4th Wednesday: – Laugh. Out. Loud.

July 1 to Aug 2 – Summer Circus Spectacular at the Asolo Theatre located inside the Ringling Museum by the admission entrance.  The Circus Arts Conservatory’s annual Summer Circus Spectacular runs weekly Tuesday through Saturday.  Performances will be held Tuesday through Friday at 11am & 2pm & Saturdays at 2pm & 5pm. For more information call 360-7399 or visit:  http://www.ringling.org/events/summer-circus-spectacular  Adults $15, Children under 12, $12 & Admission to the Circus Museum is only an additional $5 with your Summer Circus performance ticket. Tickets may be purchased in the Visitors Pavilion the day of the show.

July 4, 4:30 pm, First United Methodist Church, Sarasota
Patriotic songs, traditional American folk songs with a tribute to Harold Arlen and Sarasota premiere of One Land: An American Tapestry by Rand Snell, a work which highlight the many cultures in America. July 8 to Aug. 3 – Clearly Invisible – Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger at the Florida Studio Theatre in the John C. Court Cabaret – The show includes illusion, jazz, and storytelling. While reminiscing about his life as a magician, Seiger invites audiences for some interactive fun combining illusion, music, and humor to entertain the audience.

July 11 thru July 12 – Sarasota Improv Festival at the Florida Studio Theatre – 2 days of non-stop comedy in the Goldstein Cabaret.  FST’s Sarasota Improv Festival will bring two nights of comedy to Downtown Sarasota with some of the hottest groups on the Improv scene nationwide. Acts from all over the country will perform on the Cabaret stage.  The festival will feature Improv workshops taught by professional improvisers attending the festival.

American IdolJuly 17, 8pm – AMERICAN IDOL® LIVE! At the Van Wezel!

Fans will have the opportunity to be up close and personal with Season 13 Finalists including our very own local, Sam Woolf – from the Sarasota/Bradenton area!  The 41-show concert tour starts in NY, and stops in major cities over the summer, including Los Angeles & our home town, Sarasota!

July 17, 6pm– Intent to Deceive – Fakes & Forgeries in the Art world at the Ringling Museum.  A Walk & Talk about the forgers is included with your admission to Art After 5.  This exhibition divulges some of the world’s most notorious con artists in the art world and will be on display throughout July until Aug 3.

Did you know The Ringling is currently offering free museum admission to all active military personnel including the National Guard & Reserve and their immediate families through Labor Day?  Present your current military id at the admission counter and enjoy the art exhibits they have to offer.

The Ringling also offers free Yoga the 3rd Saturday (8:30am to 9:30am) every month at the Ca’d’Zan Terrace – bring your own mat, towel & water.  The event will be cancelled if it rains.

July 25, 5 to 8pm – Friday Fest at the Van Wezel (outside).  Bring yourCome back Alice own lawn chair or blanket and watch the sunset over the bay.

This Friday Fest features Come Back Alice, a Southern Gypsy Funk band. Soulful vocals, melodic guitars, exceptional violin and funky bass & drums make up this awesome group. Come Back Alice has played on a multitude of stages as opening acts for many popular artists and as featured performers in many of the Southeast’s best clubs.

This improvisational band found their unique sound by allowing each member to artistically express their individual style.  Lead guitarist and vocalist is Tony Tyler, accompanied by vocalist, violinist, the lovely, Dani Jaye, make quite the combination!  Friday Fest takes place in rain or shine.  In case of rain the event will continue inside at the Grand Foyer of the Van.  No outside food, drinks or coolers.  http://www.vanwezel.org/boxoffice/event.cfm?eveID=1466#.U6BqStgU_mI
